HLTFA201A PROVIDE BASIC EMERGENCY LIFE SUPPORT

 

Previously known as Level 1 First Aid, this course develops the knowledge and skills required to recognise and respond to life threatening emergencies and provide basic life support measures

 

This course covers the knowledge and skills to give basic life support including rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency

 

The focus is on an initial first aid response where the first aider is not expected to deal with complex casualties or incidents but able to respond to life threatening emergencies using basic life support measures only

 

Assessment

 

Participants are subject to competency based assessment. Participants must demonstrate competence in knowledge, skills and attitude related to course requirements

 

Award

 

A Statement of Attainment is issued to participants on successful completion and is current for 3 years

Course Content

Assessment of an emergency situation

Assessment of a casualty’s vital signs

Chain of survival

Recognition and management of casualty’s first aid needs including:

Reassurance and comfort

Unconsciousness

Respiratory distress – asthma and choking

Severe allergic reactions

Cardiac conditions – heart attack, chest pain

Casualty with no sign of life

Bleeding

Shock

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) adults, children and infant variations

 

In addition, the following topics are covered;

Assessment of need for and obtaining emergency services or medical assistance

Understanding the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Cultural sensitivity

Duty of care requirements

State/territory regulations, legislation and policies, ARC Guidelines

Incident communication and documentation

Critical incident stress management

Course Duration

6-8 hours – trainer-facilitated workshop format or a flexible mode combination of guided, self-directed personal study and workshop
